Training Classes:
Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

The goal of the 40-hour Basic Bloodstain Pattern Course is that those who participate will successfully complete the training and leave with a better understanding of how to identify, document and collect bloodstain evidence at various types of blood scenes.

When bloodstain evidence is identified, documented and given its mathematical value, the investigator can look forward to the task of successfully interpreting the evidence and providing an accurate, logical and comprehensive explanation as to the event studied.

It is not the focus of this training to produce experts in the field of bloodstain pattern analysis, this will come with further training and experience obtained through field investigation and courtroom experience.

The Course Objectives include:

  • Recognize bloodstain evidence, as described in class, as a valuable component of physical evidence, at crime scenes.
  • Create specific bloodstain patterns in a lab setting, as discussed, examined, and observed in class.
  • Demonstrate your newly learned skills on the last day of class, by successfully completing a series of mock scenes.

Topics Include:
  • History of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
  • Characteristics of Liquid Blood
  • Target Surface Considerations
  • Impact Angle Determination
  • Calculating the Area of Origin
  • Types of Bloodstains
  • Cast-off Bloodstains
  • Expirated Bloodstains
  • Documentation of Bloodstain Evidence

Students Will Learn How To:
  • Document a Bloodstain Scene
  • Interpret Bloodstain Patterns
  • Identify How The Types of Bloodstains are Made
  • Identify The Area of Convergence
  • Identify The Area of Origin
  • Identify Minimum Number of Impacts
  • Apply a Scientific Method to Questioned Stains
